The Wood River Valley recently held an extrication class. The class was designed to introduce new technologies in vehicle extrication. The class covered techniques to ensure the safety of Fire Fighters extricating patients from vehicles and the new technologies introduced by auto manufacturers. Some of the newest technologies introduced are the proliferation of Supplemental Restraint Systems (Air Bags) throughout the vehicle. The "hidden" placement of these systems can pose a hazard to Fire Fighters who may cut charged cylinders or enter the area of bag deployment in the course of extricating a patient. Some new techniques were practiced in vehicle stabilization. An example here is the use of a 4x4 post used as a counter pressure measure to stabilize the vehicle to a picket line. The pressure of the post coupled with the attachement to the vehicle makes for a very secure system when stabilizing the vehicle for extrication.
The class was given scenarios on the last day of class. The members were to identify priority patients develop a plan to extricate them and provide care during the extrication. Ther scenarios each had a minimum of two patients and a maximum of 7. Each of the scenarios tested the Fire Fighters ability to secure the scene stabilize the vehicle determine care and extrication needs and safely remove the patient from the vehicle, all while ensuring Fire Fighter safety. The class was a great refresher and had some valuable new insite into the removal from newer vehicles. Fun was had by all.
